Lesson 2: La Fotonovela - Una Inspirante Despistada (An Inspiring Absentee)
Duration of Days: 1
Lesson Objective
SWBAT identify key professional vocabulary in context, such as la entrevista, el sueldo, el currículum, and el puesto.
SWBAT interpret the tone and social dynamics of a job interview setting in a Spanish-speaking cultural context.
SWBAT recognize and use common professional greetings and closings modeled in the dialogue.
¿Qué errores cometió la aspirante y cómo afectaron su imagen profesional? (What mistakes did the applicant make and how did they affect her professional image?)
¿Cómo se diferencia el lenguaje de una entrevista de trabajo del lenguaje con amigos? (How is the language of a job interview different from language with friends?)
¿Qué consejos le darías a la protagonista para su próxima entrevista? (What advice would you give the protagonist for her next interview?)
1.2 Interpretive: Students identify the main conflict of the "clueless" applicant through visual and auditory cues.
2.1 Cultures: Analyzing the cultural expectations of punctuality and formality in a Spanish-speaking business setting.
4.1 Comparisons: Comparing the job interview process in the US versus the one depicted in the Fotonovela.
Lesson Description: The story follows a character (often Diana or Mariela) as she prepares for or attends a job interview. The "despistada" (clueless/absent-minded) element adds a layer of comedy—perhaps she arrives at the wrong office, forgets her resume, or misinterprets a question. Students watch the video to see how formal Spanish is used in a business environment, contrasting it with the informal "street Spanish" seen in previous lessons.
Purpose: The purpose is Professional Modeling. This section serves as a "soft-skills" lesson. Students observe the importance of Usted (formal address), professional attire, and how to recover from mistakes gracefully. It transitions the student from being a "learner" to being a "potential professional" in a globalized Spanish-speaking market.
DOK Levels (Depth of Knowledge)
Level 1: Recall --> Identify & List --> Students list the items the applicant brought (or forgot) and the specific job she is applying for.
Level 2: Skill/Concept --> Summarize & Contrast --> Students summarize the "clueless" moments and contrast them with what a "perfect" candidate would do.
Level 3: Strategic Thinking --> Critique & Advise --> Students critique the interviewer's and interviewee's behavior, suggesting alternative responses.
Support (Scaffolding): Provide a "Formal vs. Informal" T-chart for students to fill out while watching (e.g., ¿Cómo estás? vs. ¿Cómo está usted?).
Extension (Challenge): Have students rewrite a scene where the applicant is not clueless, using the Present Perfect to highlight her achievements (He trabajado en..., He estudiado...).
Visual/Auditory: "Watch for Body Language." Play the video on mute first. Have students guess how the interview is going based only on the characters' posture and facial expressions before adding the audio.
Selected formative and summative assessments from the SENDEROS VISTA SUPERSITE.
