Lesson Objective

SWBAT identify and describe common symptoms of illness and the corresponding remedies or healthy habits.

SWBAT express their current state of well-being using various verbs of state and emotion (e.g., sentirse, encontrarse).

SWBAT categorize activities into "healthy" and "unhealthy" lifestyles using unit-specific verbs and nouns.

¿Qué significa tener una "vida sana" en el mundo moderno? (What does it mean to have a "healthy life" in the modern world?)

¿Cómo influye nuestro estilo de vida en nuestra salud mental y física? (How does our lifestyle influence our mental and physical health?)

¿Qué consejos le darías a alguien que sufre de mucho estrés? (What advice would you give to someone suffering from a lot of stress?)

1.1 Interpersonal: Students interview a partner about their exercise routines and sleeping habits.

1.2 Interpretive: Students read a digital "Health Blog" or infographic about the benefits of a Mediterranean diet or daily activity.

3.1 Connections: Connecting Spanish vocabulary to Health and Physical Education concepts (nutrition, heart rate, mental wellness).

Lesson Description: This section introduces vocabulary related to physical and mental health. It covers body parts, common illnesses (la gripe, la tos), healthy habits (hacer gimnasia, llevar una vida sana), and emotional states (estar agotado, estar estresado). It also includes "wellness" actions like adelgazar (to lose weight) and mantenerse en forma (to stay in shape).

Purpose: The goal is to provide students with the functional vocabulary to discuss their physical condition and lifestyle choices. This unit moves students toward the ability to give health advice and reflect on their own habits, which is a key component of the "Global Challenges" and "Personal Identities" AP themes.

DOK Levels (Depth of Knowledge)

Level 1: Recall --> Label & Define --> Students label a diagram of the human body and match symptoms (e.g., fiebre) to the correct illness (e.g., gripe).

Level 2: Skill/Concept --> Categorize & Relate --> Students group vocabulary into "Mental Health," "Nutrition," and "Physical Activity" and identify opposites (e.g., adelgazar vs. engordar).

Level 3: Strategic Thinking --> Analyze & Advise --> Students are given a "Patient Case" (e.g., Luis fuma y no duerme) and must analyze the risks and suggest three healthy changes using the new vocabulary.

Support (Scaffolding): Provide a "Symptom-to-Solution" matching chart to assist with initial production. Use a visual "Mood Meter" for students to point to their emotional state.

Extension (Challenge): Require advanced students to use reflexive verbs and frequency adverbs (a menudo, raras veces) to add detail to their descriptions of routines.

Visual/Kinesthetic: "Simón Dice" (Simon Says): Use the game to review body parts and physical actions (e.g., "Simón dice: estira los brazos").
