Students will know how major currents of U.S. socio-economic and political events manifest as specific local problems. Students will know the local civic structures necessary to exercise their political voice in a safe environment. Students will understand how change over time affects local community dynamics.

Students will research contemporary local challenges using available online news media. Students will participate in peer-to-peer inquiry and collaborate on local issue analyses. Students will practice articulating local socio-political viewpoints through argumentative writing.

  • Students will formulate arguments in written pieces or digital blogs focusing on local community issues.

  • Students will engage in collaborative classroom discussions to show mastery of multi-perspective civic reasoning.

  • Learning will serve to fulfill specific indicators within the Mastery-Based Learning (MBL) Social Studies Standards.
