This lesson aligns with the SAT Command of Evidence and Inferences question types. Students will read complex, informational text passages about industrial trade-offs and cross-reference the text with graphical data to check for logical consistency.
Students will identify three non-monetary decisions they have made in their own lives and complete an analysis of the cost, and benefits of each decision along with the next best alternative. Students will learn to quantify trade-offs using the Production Possibilities Curve (PPC) model. They will practice shifting points along the curve to calculate what is gained versus what is given up in various scenarios. Finally, they will complete an SAT-style reading synthesis task that links historical industrial shifts to a graphical PPC.
This lesson teaches students to look past monetary costs and evaluate the true trade-offs of decisions using a standardized economic model. DOK Level: 3 (Strategic Thinking).
Students will examine the opportunity cost of their time—specifically, the trade-off between working a part-time job after school versus participating in sports, clubs, or studying for college access exams.
