Lesson Objective

Explain the difference between fission and fusion reactions

What is a fission reaction?
What is a fusion reaction?
Where do fission and fusion reactions happen?
What are the reactants and products of fission and fusion reactions?

PS1.C Nuclear Processes
Nuclear processes, including fusion, fission, and radioactive decays of unstable nuclei, involve release or absorption of energy. The total number of neutrons plus protons does not change in any nuclear process.

Students will gain an understanding of how energy layers onto of nuclear reactions when both fission and fusion take place.

Students will be able to determine if a nuclear reaction is an example of fission or fusion.
