Lesson 4: Measuring Matter
Duration of Days: 3
Lesson Objective
LP 1.3
- I can compare the physical and chemical properties of various substance to determine if one is a compatible substitute for the other (i.e.- compare properties of copper and plastic pipes)
LP 1.4
- I can use the structure and properties of matter to classify pure substance and mixtures and identify patterns in the classification of matter
What characteristics/properties of matter can be measured?
How can these characteristics/properties of matter be compared to other substances?
Can we identify substances using quantitative and qualitative measurements?
What tools and instruments are used to measure matter?
density, intensive, extensive
HS-PS1-3: Plan and conduct investigation to gather evidence to compare the structure of substances at the bulk scale
GS 2b, 2c: Investigations - Students can design and conduct appropriate scientific investigations.
GS 4a, 4c: Data Analysis and Interpretation - Students can analyze and interpret scientific data and solve problems using a range of tools, technology and mathematical techniques.
In this lesson students will identify various ways to measure matter including: density, boiling point, melting point, conductivity, malleability, hardness, luster and density.
They will also demonstrate using laboratory tools & techniques: balance, graduated cylinders, rulers, water displacement, etc
