Explore the unique behaviors that define waves. Unlike solid matter, multiple waves can occupy the exact same space at the exact same time, leading to complex interference patterns.
Noise-Canceling Headphones: Active noise-canceling headphones have a tiny external microphone that listens to ambient background noise (like a drone of an airplane engine). The headphones instantly process this sound and generate an inverted sound wave that is exactly 180 degrees out of phase with the noise. When both waves reach your eardrum, they undergo complete destructive interference, totally canceling out the noise.
