Lesson Objective

Students will be able to apply Newton's third law and momentum to determine the outcome of a collision. Using action/reaction pairs the conservation of momentum will lead to equalities that can be used to solve for velocities before and after a collision.

What is an action/reaction pair?
What causes the impulse on an object during a collision?
Are other properties conserved in a collision?

Action/reaction pair
Conserved
External force
Internal force

GS4: Data Analysis and Interpretation

Students can analyze and interpret scientific data and solve problems using a range of tools, technology and mathematical techniques.

This lesson continues to describe and apply momentum to two bodies before a collision. By conserving momentum, students can derive values for velocities after the collision.

DOK: 2-3

TBD

Students will perform calculations on the outcome of a collision or work backwards and calculate pre-collision momentum values.
