Lesson 4: Magnetism and Magnetic Fields
Duration of Days: 3
Lesson Objective
Map magnetic field lines using compasses and iron filings, and compare the properties of permanent magnets with magnetic domains in ferromagnetic materials.
Why can you isolate a single electric charge (like an electron), but you can never isolate a single magnetic pole?
How does alignment at the microscopic level (domains) determine whether a piece of metal behaves like a magnet?
How do magnetic field lines behave differently than electric field lines?

HS-PS2-4: Use mathematical representations of Newton’s Law of Gravitation and Coulomb’s Law to describe and predict the gravitational and electrostatic forces between objects.
HS-PS3-5: Develop and use a model of two objects interacting through electric or magnetic fields to illustrate the forces between objects and the changes in energy of the objects due to the interaction.
To introduce the dipole nature of magnetism (North/South) and establish the concept of magnetic fields prior to merging electricity and magnetism into a unified force.
How Earth acts as a shield against solar radiation: Earth's liquid iron outer core generates a massive magnetosphere. This magnetic field deflects harmful solar winds and cosmic radiation toward the poles, creating the Auroras (Northern and Southern Lights) while preserving our atmosphere.
