Lesson 3: Matter Cycling & Biogeochemical Cycles
Duration of Days: 3
Lesson Objective
Explain how the activities of autotrophs, heterotrophs, and decomposers drive the movement of matter through biogeochemical cycles.
Predict the biological consequences of interrupting a nutrient cycle.
How is the conservation of matter demonstrated through the global recycling of carbon, nitrogen, water, and phosphorus?
What happens to an ecosystem when key chemical reservoirs are altered or depleted?
8.2-Energy Flow Through Ecosystems
Track the biological fluxes and geological reservoirs of the Carbon, Water, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus cycles. Special attention is paid to the assimilation of these elements into biomolecules (proteins, nucleic acids, lipids).
