Lesson 6: 7.7 Approximate Integration
Duration of Days: 3
Lesson Objective
Students will be able to approximate integrals using the three approximation methods and be able to find error estimates of their approximations.
- When would we need to approximate an integral instead of solving exactly?
- Which approximation method is most accurate, and why?
- Midpoint Rule
- Trapezoidal Rule
- Simpson's Rule
- left/right endpoint approximation
- error bounds
(Solving integrals using approximation methods)
- Approximating integrals that are unsolvable by other methods and calculating error bounds for the approximations
- DOK Levels 1-4
- all applications of integrals
The three approximation rules are fairly straightforward but calculating the error bounds can sometimes be tricky for students.
