Lesson 2: 8.2 Arithmetic Sequences and Partial Sums
Duration of Days: 3
Lesson Objective
1. Recognize, write, and find the nth terms of arithmetic sequences.
2. Find nth partial sums of arithmetic sequences.
3. Use arithmetic sequences to model and solve real-life problems.
How do you find the nth term or partial sum of an arithmetic sequence?
arithmetic sequence
arithmetic
common difference
HSA-SSE.A.1: Interpret expressions that represent a quantity in terms of its context.
HSA-SSE.A.2: Use the structure of an expression to identify ways to rewrite it.
Use Khan Academy Resources
Students will learn about arithmetic sequences and partial sums, which can be found in many real life applications involving patterns. Encourage students to find the number of tiles in each figure. Extend the pattern and come up with a formula for the nth term.
Arithmetic sequences can reduce the amount of time it takes to find the sum of a sequence of numbers with a common difference. Arithmetic sequences can be used to find the number of bricks needed to lay a brick patio.
Some students make the mistake that the first term of an arithmetic sequence is the y-intercept. Remind students that the y-intercept can be found by subtracting the common difference from the first term.
Encourage low level learners to write out the first few terms of a sequence before they find a formula for it.
