Lesson Objective

1. Use sequence notation to write the terms of sequences.
2. Use factorial notation.
3. Use summation notation to write sums.
4. Find sums of infinite series.
5. Use sequences and series to model and solve real-life problems.

How do you represent a sequence of numbers or the sum of a sequence?

infinite sequence
terms
finite sequence
recursive
factorial
summation notation
finite series

HSA-IF.A.3: Recognize an sequence as a function whose domain is a subset of the integers.

Use Khan Academy Resources

Students should have an understanding of writing the terms of a sequence and find the nth term. They will use this prior knowledge to study and simplify series, with and introductions to summations notations.

Sequences and series are useful in modeling sets of values in order to identify patterns. For instance, showing how a sequence can be used to model the population of trout in a lake.

Some students think that 2n! is the same as 2!n!

To help students understand factorials, encourage them to write out the product during their calculations.
