Lesson 4: 7.1 Solving systems of Equations
Duration of Days: 3
Lesson Objective
Use the methods of substitution and graphing to solve systems of equations in two variables
Use systems of equations to model and solve real world problems
How do you use the method of substitution and graphing to solve systems of equations?
Systems of equations, solution, graphing, substitution
HSA-REI.C.6: Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables.
Use Khan Academy
Students will learn how to solve problems relating to business and engineering that involve more than on equation with more than one variable using systems of linear and nonlinear equations.
Use systems of equations to compare two models that estimate the number of board feet in a 16 foot board
Some students incorrectly assume that if their solution checks in one equations, then they do not need to check it in the other equation.
Have students work in pairs. One students covers the solution and tells the other student how to solve the system of equations by giving directions based on the instructions in the solutions. Then they switch roles.
