Lesson 4: 3.4 Chain Rule
Duration of Days: 3
Lesson Objective
Students will be able to derive and apply the rule for differentiating composite functions.
1. How do we find the derivative for composite functions?
2. How will this change if there are multiple functions embedded within functions?
- composite functions
- Chain Rule
(Differentiation Rules)
Differentiation Rules - Chain Rule:
DOK levels 1-4
Derivatives as rates of change, such as velocity, etc.
Students often struggle with Chain Rule, in general, but after practicing many examples, they usually get it.
A common mistake is changing the "inner function" when taking the derivative of the "outer function".
