In a right triangle, the sum of the measures of the legs squared equals the square of the measure of the hypotenuse.
Connection between the Pythagorean Theorem and the Distance Formula.
Students should be sure that they are using the two legs as "a" and "b" and the the hypotenuse (across from the right angle) as "c".
Students approaching grade level can be given practice problems in small groups to work with other students or directly with the teacher.
Students beyond grade level can make deeper connections in the following way: Give students two points on a coordinate plane and allow them to use the Pythagorean Theorem to explore how they would find the length of the segment that connects those two points.
