Lesson Objective

Make stemplots of quantitative data.

Describe stemplots.

Compare distributions of quantitative data with stemplots.

How do we determine the stems and leaves?

How do we organize the leaves in ascending order within each stem?

How do we label the stemplot to make it clear and easy to read?

How can we use back-to-back stemplots to compare two data sets?

Stemplot

HSS.ID.A.1
Represent data with plots on the real number line (dot plots, histograms, and box plots).

The creation and interpretation of stemplots will be addressed. We will also compare distributions using back to back stemplots.

What does the Electoral College do? (Example pg 34)

Who has the most votes? (Example pg 35)

Back to back stemplots are great for comparison but shape can be difficult to spot.

For advanced students: Provide more complex data sets with three-digit or four-digit numbers.

For struggling students: Provide additional support and simplified data sets.
