Lesson 4: 1-4 Writing Linear Equations
Duration of Days: 4
Lesson Objective
Write an equation of a line given the slope and a point on the line.
Write an equation of a line parallel or perpendicular to a given line.
What two pieces of information do you need to write an equation in slope intercept form?
How can you transform point slope form to slope intercept form?
Given an equation in slope intercept form, what do you know about a line that is parallel to this line?
Given an equation in slope intercept form, what do you know about a line that is perpendicular to this line?
slope intercept form
point slope form
parallel
perpendicular
A.SSE.1.b Interpret complicated expressions by viewing one or more of their parts as a single entity
A.CED.2 Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities' graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales.
SAT questions related to slope: 8-3-13,6-3-1,5-4-7,8-3-19,7-4-17,1-3-6,3-4-8; systems: 4-3-16,1-3-18,1-3-9,2-3-2,8-3-18,6-4-11,7-3-3,1-3-11,7-4-11,1-4-19,8-3-10,2-4-29,2-3-20,3-3-9; writing equations: 5-4-11,4-3-8,8-4-7,1-3-12,7-3-19; inequalities: 5-4-13,7-4-5,4-4-19,8-3-6,1-4-28,5-3-7,6-3-14; graphing: 6-3-5; total unit: 2-3-9
The point slope form of a linear equation is related to the slope formula. As an alternative to memorizing point slope form, replace (x2,y2) with (x,y) in the slope formula, then multiply each side by (x-x1)
Medical insurance companies often requre their customers to make a co-payment for every doctor's office visit in addition to an annual insurance premium. If an insurance company charges $2280 annually and requires a copayment of $35 per office visit, then the linear equation y=35x+2280 represents the total annual cost y for x doctor's office visits.
Make sure that students know the difference between parallel and perpendicular
Provide real world signs to illustrate problems that students can work in pairs to solve. Move around the room to monitor progress.
