Lesson 3: 1-3 Rate of Change and Slope
Duration of Days: 3
Lesson Objective
Find rate of change
Determine the slope of a line
The rate of change is a ration that compares what two quantities?
For linear functions, how do you find the rate of change?
What is another name for the average rate of change?
rate of change
slope
F.IF4 For a function that models a relationship between two quantities, interpret key features of graphs and tables in terms of the quantities, and sketch graphs showing key features given a verbal description of the relationship
F.IF.6 Calculate and interpret the average rate of change of a functions over a specified interval. Estimate the rate of change from a graph

The steepness of a line is measured by its slope. The slope of a nonvertical line is found by identifying two points on the line and using the slope formula
Using d=rt to relate the total distance a car has traveled over various time intervals
Make sure students can tell the difference between a positive and a negative slope
If students have a hard time relating 0 to a horizontal line, they can remember that horizontal has and o in it, while vertical does not.
