A polynomial is a monomial or sum or difference of monomials. To add polynomials, add the coefficients of like terms using the rules of adding real numbers. To subtarct polynomials, replace each term of the polynomial being subtracted with its additive inverse and combine like terms.

The sales data of digital audio players can be modeled by the equation U = -2.7t^2 + 49.4t + 128.7, where U is the number of units shipped in millions and t is the number of years since 2005. The expressions -2.7t^2 + 49.4t + 128.7 is an example of a polynomial. Polynomilas can be used to model situations.

Some students may find it helpful to mark through like terms as they mentally combine them. This saves time spent on rewriting to group like terms.

Have students work in pairs to find the sums and differences. Then compare answers and steps used to get their answers. When they differ, pairs should consult with another pair of students. Students should offer constructive reinforcement to each other.
