A correlation between tow events or two sets of data does not necessarily mean that one is caused by the other. It is important to determine whether the relationship between sets and data is one of causation or just correlation in order t evaluate claims and draw conclusions about data.

A students found a negative correlation between understanding HTML and likin licorice. But does understanding HTML cause a person to dislike licorice?

If students are having difficulty differentiating between correlation and causation, then remind students to ask themselves whether change is one of the variables causes anchange in the other.
