Lesson 1: X- and Y- Intercepts
Duration of Days: 2
Lesson Objective
Students will identify x- and y-intercepts from graphs and learn to calculate them directly from equations in standard form to assist in graphing.
Why is standard form useful for identifying intercepts and graphing?
How can we use standard form to compare two unrelated quantities?
x-intercept
y-intercept
linear equation
coefficient
standard form
8.EE.B.5: Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph.
Students will practice reading intercepts from graphs and solving for them algebraically in standard form equations (Ax + By = C). (DOK 2)
Confusing the x-intercept with the y-intercept when solving algebraically.
Difficulty understanding that an intercept always has a coordinate value of zero for the opposite axis.
