Unit 2: Shape
Duration of Days: 10
Geometric vs. Organic: Students will know how to distinguish between "man-made" mathematical shapes (circles, squares, triangles) and "natural" fluid shapes found in biology.
Positive and Negative Space: They will understand that the "empty" space around an object (Negative) is just as important as the object itself (Positive) for achieving balance.
Abstracting the Real: They will know that any complex object can be simplified into a collection of basic shapes (e.g., a human body made of ovals and cylinders).
Static vs. Dynamic: Students will know how the orientation of a shape (flat on its base vs. tilted on an edge) creates either a sense of calm or a sense of movement.
Students will investigate the relationship between Geometric and Organic shapes, the vital importance of Positive and Negative Space, and how shapes function as the "skeleton" of every great composition.
Create a final work of art that focuses on the element of "shape."
