Unit 1: Line
Duration of Days: 14
Categories of Line: Students will know the difference between Descriptive lines (outlines, contour), Implicit lines (implied, psychological), and Expressive lines (gesture, calligraphy).
The Power of Line Weight: They will understand that variations in thickness can create the illusion of light, shadow, and physical depth (perspective) on a flat surface.
Directional Psychology: They will know that horizontal lines suggest rest/stability, vertical lines suggest strength/height, and diagonal lines suggest action/instability.
The 3D Translation: Students will know how a 2D line (drawing) translates into a 3D line (wire, string, or edge) and how it defines volume without mass.
Students will investigate how line functions in both 2D and 3D contexts, learning to manipulate line weight, direction, and character to lead a viewer's eye through a composition.
A final project (drawing, painting, or sculpture)that focuses on the use of line in art.
