Unit 5: Slab Building
Duration of Days: 10
Students will know how slab construction differs from pinch and coil techniques. They will understand how rolling, compressing, and joining slabs creates strong, flat surfaces and sharp edges. Students will also know how templates, scoring, and slab thickness affect stability, accuracy, and surface design.
Students will roll and cut clay slabs, use templates to plan forms, and assemble slab-built objects such as containers, boxes, or architectural forms. They will score, slip, and compress seams, refine edges, and add texture or surface design before drying and firing.
Students will complete slab-built ceramic forms that shows clean construction, even thickness, secure joins, and intentional design. Through critique and reflection, students will explain how slab techniques were used to create both structure and surface.
