Unit 4: Modeling
Duration of Days: 14
Students will know how pinch, coil, and modeling tool techniques are used to create hollow ceramic forms. They will understand how wall thickness, compression, and secure attachments affect the strength and kiln safety of a sculpture. Students will also know how exaggeration, proportion, and detail are used to create expressive characters in clay.
Students will create modeled ceramic forms. They will pinch and shape hollow bodies, use coils to build and attach features, and apply modeling tools to carve, refine, and add texture. Students will plan, build, revise, and prepare their work for firing through critique and reflection.
Students will complete kiln-safe, hollow ceramic sculptures that demonstrate strong construction, expressive design, and effective use of pinch, coil, and modeling tool techniques. Students will also explain how their sculpting choices support both form and function.
