Unit 2: Portrait
Duration of Days: 15
Anatomy of Proportions: The standard "rules" of the face (e.g., eyes are in the center of the head, one eye-width apart).
The Power of Measurement: How to use sighting and measuring techniques to find unique distances between features on a specific person.
Perspective and Foreshortening: How features shift and "squish" when the head tilts up, down, or turns to a three-quarter view.
The Geometry of the Head: How to use simplified shapes (like the Loomis Method or the Asaro Head) to build a solid foundation before adding details.
Set Up a Head Base: Use basic shapes (like a sphere and a jaw block) to start a portrait with the correct overall head shape.
Find the Halfway Point: Correctly place the eyes in the middle of the head (not too high on the forehead).
Measure "Eye-Widths": Use the width of one eye to measure the distance between features and the total width of the face.
Angle-Check Features: Hold a pencil up to the subject to find the exact tilt of the eyes, nose, and mouth.
