Lesson 1: Balance - The Mirror Effect
Duration of Days: 3
Lesson Objective
Students will understand that balance in art means the "visual weight" is equal on both sides and will demonstrate this by creating a symmetrical butterfly or "blot" painting.
1. If you stand on one leg, are you balanced?
2. What happens if we put all the paint on just one side of the paper?
3. How can we make the left side look exactly like the right side?
Balance, Symmetry, Mirror, Equal, Center, Weight.
NCAS: VA:Pr6.1.HS1 (Analyze and describe the impact that an exhibition or collection has on personal awareness).
Adaptive Focus: Bilateral coordination (using both hands together) and understanding the concept of a "midline."
Mathematics: Identifying lines of symmetry in polygons and nature.
Biology: Understanding bilateral symmetry in the human body (two eyes, two arms, etc.).
Description: Students will fold a large piece of paper in half to find the "center line." They will apply paint to only one side and then "squish" the paper together to transfer the image to the other side.
Purpose: To provide a physical, "magic-like" demonstration of how elements can be distributed equally to create a stable image.
DOK Level: Level 2 (Skill/Concept) – Students will apply the concept of symmetry to create a balanced composition.
Nature: Looking at butterflies, leaves, and human faces to see how nature uses balance.
Textiles: Exploring Mexican Papel Picado or Symmetrical Weavings where patterns match on both sides.
Architecture: Looking at the Taj Mahal or local government buildings that are perfectly balanced.
Thinking balance means the art has to be "boring" or "straight."
Confusion if the paint doesn't transfer perfectly (reframe it as "unique balance").
Visual: Draw a thick, Neon "Center Line" on the paper so students know exactly where the "mirror" is located.
Physical: Use a Rolling Pin or a weighted "press" to help students with limited hand strength squish the two sides of the paper together.
Digital: Use a Symmetry Tool on an iPad/Tablet where drawing on one side automatically draws on the other.
What Students Will Know: That balance means the two sides of a picture match or carry the same "weight."
-
What Students Will Do: Create a symmetrical "Squish Painting" using at least three colors.
-
Demonstration of Learning: When shown two pictures—one with paint only in a corner and one with paint mirrored—the student will point to the one that is "Balanced."
