Symmetry: Students will know that "Balance" means the left and right sides of a picture match or have the same "visual weight."

The Midline: Students will understand the concept of a "center line" that divides an object into two equal parts.

Stability: Students will recognize that a balanced piece of art feels "steady" or "even," rather than tipped over.

The "Squish" Technique: Students will apply paint to one side of a pre-folded paper and press the sides together to create a mirrored image (Symmetry).

Weight Sorting: Students will place physical objects (like blocks or beans) onto a 2D "balance scale" drawing to make both sides look "equally full."

Body Mirroring: Students will participate in a "Mirror Game" where they try to match the arm or hand positions of a partner to feel physical balance.

  • Visual Choice: When presented with two images—one where all the shapes are "clumped" in a corner and one where they are spread out evenly—the student will correctly identify the "Balanced" one by pointing, gazing, or using a "Switch."

  • Symmetry Completion: Given a butterfly wing on one side of a paper, the student will successfully place a matching sticker or paint stroke on the opposite side.

  • Physical Feedback: The student will successfully create a "Squish Painting" that shows a clear transfer of color from the left side to the right side.
