Lesson Objective

Students will learn the basic mechanical rhythm of weaving (Over/Under) using high-tactile materials.

1. How do we make strings stay together? 2. Can you feel the "in and out" rhythm?

Fiber, Loom, Warp, Weft, Weave.

VA:Cr2.2.HS1 (Demonstrate safe use of materials/tools).

Sequential Logic: Understanding multi-step instructions and repeating patterns.

Using a cardboard loom, students weave thick materials like fabric strips, pipe cleaners, or long grass. Purpose: To build bilateral coordination and fine motor strength. DOK Level 2.

The fabric of their clothes; seatbelts; wicker baskets; bird nests.

Thinking the weaving will fall apart if it isn't "tight" (remind them that loose weaving is also art!).

Use stiff materials (pipe cleaners) instead of yarn for students who struggle with "floppy" textures. Use a "Hula Hoop Loom" for gross motor (big arm) movements.

Student will successfully complete three rows of weaving where the material stays secured within the warp strings.
