Lesson Objective

Students will understand that an "impression" is a copy of a texture and will use physical pressure to transfer patterns.

1. What happens when we "push" paint onto paper? 2. Can you make the same shape twice without drawing it?

Print, Pressure, Transfer, Template, Repetit

VA:Cr2.1.HS1 (Experiment with materials/approaches).

Graphic Analysis: Recognizing how patterns are replicated (identifying recurring data sets).

Students apply paint to textured materials (bubble wrap, sponges, cups) and press them onto paper. Purpose: To explore cause-and-effect through physical force. DOK Level 2.

Fingerprints on a screen; tire tracks in mud; "Use-By" date stamps on food.

Thinking the object is the art, rather than the tool used to make the mark.

Use T-Bar handles or tennis balls on stamps for easier gripping. Use a "Squish Box" (placing the paper and stamp inside a container) for students who need a contained workspace.

    • When shown the physical stamp and the finished paper, the student will correctly match the tool to the print it created.
