Lesson Objective

Students will apply Fiber Art techniques (embroidery and assembly) to create a 3D soft sculpture that symbolizes the totality of their personal values.

What does it feel like to hold the "things you love" in your hands? How does the texture of the string change the "feel" of your heart?

Fiber Art: Fine art whose material consists of natural or synthetic fiber and other components, such as fabric or yarn. Polyfil: A synthetic fiber used for stuffing.

VA:Cr2.2.HS: Explain how traditional and non-traditional materials may impact human health and the environment (discussing textile origins).

Synthesis of Meaning: Just as a conclusion ties an essay together, the "stuffing" phase ties the 2D pieces into a finished 3D argument.

Description: 3 days of sewing and stuffing. Purpose: Patience, fine motor skills, and physicalizing emotion. DOK Level 4: Extended Thinking (creating a final physical artifact).

Milagros: Traditional Latin American folk charms (often hearts) used for healing and protection.

"I'm bad at sewing, so it won't look good." Correction: "Wabi-sabi"—the beauty of the handmade and the "imperfect" stitch represents the unique nature of our own hearts.

For beginners: Use blunt embroidery needles and pre-punched holes. For advanced: Challenge them to use different stitch types (French knots, backstitch) for different "loves."

Summative Rubric: Evaluation based on Alignment (matching the 2D map to the 3D stitches), Craftsmanship (secure seams), and Completion.

Fabric/Felt, embroidery floss (multiple colors), needles, scissors, Polyfil/stuffing.
