Lesson Objective

Students will analyze a personally significant song to identify a "core lyric" that serves as a linguistic representation of their current internal state.

Why do we gravitate toward certain songs during specific seasons of life? How can a single sentence capture a complex feeling?

Resonate: To evoke a feeling of shared emotion or belief. Anchor Lyric: A specific line of a song that holds the most weight or meaning for the listener.

VA:Re7.1.HS: Analyze how responses to art (music/visual) are influenced by personal experiences.

Determining Central Themes: Identifying the "thesis" or core message of a text (song lyrics) based on supporting details.

Description: Deep listening and reflective journaling. Purpose: Establishing personal relevance and thematic intent. DOK Level 2: Analysis of personal response.

Music Therapy: The use of "song-sharing" as a way to communicate things that are too difficult to say in plain speech.

"I should pick a song that sounds deep even if I don't like it." Correction: The power is in the authenticity; pick the song you actually have on repeat.

For ELL students: Allow lyrics in their native language; focus on the "feeling" of the words rather than a perfect English translation.

Formative: Review of the "Anchor Lyric" for clarity and personal connection.

Art journals, headphones, personal devices (for music), pens.
