Lesson Objective

Sudenst will be introduced to at least 3 speciality lenses, as well as, as many filters as possible.
Studenst will learn through exploration.

How are these lenses different than ones we have already used?

Which one is a prime lens?

What does fish-eye mean?

Why would a photographer want various lenses?

Fish eye

Wide angle

Rectilinear: Lenses that keep straight lines straight (Wide-Angle).

Barrel Distortion: The "bulging" effect found in Fisheye lenses.

Prime Lens: A lens with a fixed focal length (most Pancake lenses).

Crop Factor: The 1.6x multiplier on the T7 that makes a 24mm lens behave like a 38mm.

AS #1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.

AS #5: Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.

Math: Calculating effective focal length using the 1.6x crop factor (Ratios/Proportions).

Reading: Analyzing technical manuals and comparing/contrasting product specifications.

Description, Purpose,

DOK Level:DOK 1 (Recall): Identifying a lens by its physical size or glass curvature.

DOK 2 (Skill/Concept): Explaining how a Fisheye lens changes the perspective of a horizon line.

DOK 3 (Strategic Thinking): Determining which lens to use for a client shoot in a cramped studio apartment.

Fisheye: Use in 90s/00s hip-hop music videos and modern skate culture.

Pancake: Photojournalism and documenting community events without being "intrusive."

Wide-angle lenses are the same as Fisheye.” (Correction: Wide-angles try to fix distortion; Fisheyes embrace it.)“

A Pancake lens is just a cheap, bad lens.” (Correction: They are often sharper than kit zooms because of their simple internal glass design.)

Differentiation Strategies:Visual Learners: Side-by-side photo comparisons of the same subject shot with all three lenses and any other speciality lenses.

Kinesthetic Learners: Handing students a T7 and having them physically swap the lenses to feel the weight/size difference.

A portfolio where students must submit one photo using each lens style-possible the same photo for comparsion.

  • Canon EOS Rebel T7 bodies.
  • Canon EF-S 10-18mm (Wide), Rokinon 8mm (Fisheye), Canon EF-S 24mm (Pancake).
