Redefining "Volunteerism" Through a Collectivist Lens
Many ESOL students come from collectivist cultures where helping neighbors, extended family, and the community is woven into daily survival and tradition.

"The children are not the future": An ESOL student might take this literally and think the author is being pessimistic or negative about children. They may miss the rhetorical twist—that youth are the present leaders.
"Gotten sort of a negative rap”:: Even with the "In Other Words" sidebar, the word "rap" is heavily associated with music for teens. Students might confuse this with negative music lyrics rather than understanding it means having a bad reputation.
"Out in force": This military/police idiom might cause students to think youth volunteers are acting as an aggressive or armed group rather than simply turning out in large numbers.
