Lesson Objective

After rereading and discussing a model of close reading, students will be able to analyze the characteristics of a text to determine the author’s purpose and point of view.

Checklist for Author’s Purpose and Point of View:

In order to identify author’s purpose and point of view, note the following:
- facts, statistics, and graphic aids as these indicate that an author is writing to inform
- descriptions that present a complicated process in plain language, which may indicate that an author is writing to explain
- whether the author uses figurative language or other descriptive words in order to intensify an emotion
- the author’s use of rhetoric, or the art of speaking and writing persuasively, such as using repetition to drive home a point

To determine the author’s purpose and point of view, consider the following questions:
- How does the author convey, or communicate, information in the text?
- Does the author use figurative or emotional language? What effect does it have on the author’s point of view?
- Are charts, graphs, maps and other graphic aids included in the text? For what purpose?
- How does the author use rhetoric to try and persuade readers to accept a specific point of view or opinion? Is the use of
rhetoric successful? Why or why not?
