After rereading and discussing a model of close reading, students will be able to analyze how authors use structure, prosody, and graphic element in a poem.

In order to identify an poet’s choices concerning how to structure a poem, order events within it, and manipulate time, note the
following:
- the forms and overall structures of the poem
the rhyme, rhythm and meter, if present
lines and stanzas in the poem that suggest its meaning
- ways that the poem’s structures connects to its meaning
- lines and stanzas where the poet manipulated time to create an effect such as mystery, tension, or surprise
- how the poet ordered events to create an effect such as mystery, tension, or surprise

- How does the poet structure their poem? How do they order events within the poem? How do they manipulate time?
- What effects, such as mystery, tension, or surprise, does the poet create through their choices?
- How does the poet’s choice of form or structure affect the overall meaning of the poem?
