Lesson Objective

After rereading and discussing a model of close reading, students will be able to explain and analyze the characteristics of an excerpt from a multimedia text.

Checklist for Media:

In order to determine the representation of a subject or a key scene in two different artistic mediums, do the following:
- note the artistic medium and its features
- identify what is emphasized or absent in each treatment of a subject or a key scene
- examine why the same subject receives completely different treatments in different media
- consider sources, as a story about a historical event might refer, directly or indirectly, to letters, paintings, plays, or photographs
- from the same place and time as the events that took place

To analyze the representation of a subject or a key scene in two different artistic media, including what is emphasized or absent in
each treatment, consider the following questions:
- Is the content informational or fictional? How does this affect the treatment of the key scene or subject?
- What are the strengths and weaknesses of each artistic medium? How does this affect the treatment of the key scene or
subject?
- What is emphasized and what is absent, or left out of each medium’s version of events?
