Lesson Objective

After rereading and discussing a model of close reading, students will be able to analyze how the author unfolds an analysis or series of ideas or events, including how they are introduced and developed.

Checklist for Informational Text Elements:

In order to determine how the author unfolds an analysis or series of ideas or events, note the following:
- the order in which specific points are made
- how the author introduces and develops ideas or events
- connections that are drawn between ideas and events
- key details in the text that describe or explain important ideas, events, or individuals
- other features, such as charts, maps, sidebars, and photo captions that might provide additional information outside of the main
text
- similarities and differences between types of information in a text

To analyze how the author unfolds an analysis or series of ideas or events, including the order in which the points are made, how
they are introduced and developed, and the connections that are drawn between them, consider the following questions:
- How are the informational text elements related?
- In what order are the ideas or events the author presents organized?
- How does the order in which ideas or events are presented affect the connections between them?
- What other features, if any, help readers to analyze the events, ideas, or individuals in the text?
