Authors compose fiction that operates on both literal and metaphorical levels. Authors make choices including narrator's point of view, setting, plot, characterization and symbolism.
Students will read The Great Gatsby and through discussion, close reads and written responses to selected excerpts, understand the plot, analyze the reliability of the narrator, the motives of the characters, the pace of the plot and the symbols, motifs and themes of the novel.
Through writing and discussion, students will demonstrate understanding of:
Central or main idea, figurative language, author's purpose and point of view, dramatic elements and structure, summarizing and theme.
