Lesson Objective

After rereading and discussing a model of close reading, students will be able to use reference materials to determine and clarify the precise meaning, parts of speech, and etymology of unknown and multiple-meaning words, as well as verify the preliminary determination of the meaning of a word or phrase.

How does a reader determine the meaning of a word they don't know? How does a reader determine which dictionary definition is the precise one for the word? How will this thinking help the reader analyze other unknown words in the text?
